What Does Car Detailing Include?

A full car detail includes a hand wash and decontamination of the exterior, protection for the paint, and a deep clean of the entire interior: vacuuming, shampooing or steaming carpets and upholstery, cleaning and conditioning leather, and finishing all glass. What car detailing includes beyond that depends on the package, which is exactly why two “full details” at two shops can be very different services.

Here is the honest checklist, step by step, based on how we run details at our shop in Wexford. Use it to compare any shop’s menu, including ours.

The exterior checklist

A proper exterior detail covers, in order:

• Pre-rinse and foam hand wash. Loosens grit before anything touches the paint, then a mitt wash panel by panel. No brushes, no tunnel.
• Wheels and tires. Dedicated brushes and cleaners for brake dust, then dressed tires.
• Chemical decontamination. Iron remover for embedded brake dust particles and tar remover for road grime that washing cannot touch.
• Clay bar treatment. A clay bar glides over the paint and pulls out bonded contamination, leaving the surface glass-smooth. Some shops include it; some price it separately (as an add-on it is $65 with us, included in our Exterior Detail package).
• Protection. A machine-applied sealant or wax so the clean survives more than one rainstorm.
• Trim and glass. Exterior plastics dressed, windows finished.

If a shop’s “exterior detail” is just a wash and a spray wax, it is a wash, whatever the menu calls it. The decontamination steps are what make it a detail. That is the core of our Exterior Detail package.

The interior checklist

The interior half of a detail includes:

• Full vacuum. Seats out of the way where possible, seat rails, trunk, and every crevice, not just the visible carpet.
• Carpets and upholstery. Steam cleaning and shampoo with hot water extraction, which pulls dirt out of the fibers rather than smearing it around.
• Leather. Cleaned with dedicated products, then conditioned to protect against UV and cracking.
• Every surface wiped. Dash, console, door panels, cupholders, vents. Detail brushes reach where cloths cannot.
• Interior glass. Done last, streak free, including the inside of the windshield that fogs up in Pittsburgh winters.

This is what our Interior Detail covers at $185 for a sedan. Combine both checklists, add an engine bay wipe down, and you have our Signature Full Detail at $290.

What is usually an add-on, not included

Condition-specific problems are priced separately at most shops, ours included, so people with clean cars are not subsidizing people with rough ones:

• Pet hair removal ($45 with us)
• Odor and ozone treatment ($50)
• Stain and spot removal ($45)
• Headlight restoration ($85 per pair)
• Engine bay cleaning as a standalone deep clean ($70)

None of this is upselling if it is disclosed up front. It becomes upselling when a shop quotes low, then “discovers” mandatory add-ons at pickup. Ask for the out-the-door price before you book; a straight answer is a good sign.

What car detailing does not include

Just as important as the checklist is knowing where detailing ends:

• Paint correction is separate. A standard detail cleans and protects paint but does not machine-polish away swirl marks or scratches. That is its own service with its own pricing.
• Mechanical work, dents, and rust repair belong to other trades entirely.
• Permanent results are not a thing. Protection extends results for weeks or months, but a detailed car still lives in the real world.

If a package promises showroom paint on a ten-year-old car for $99, one of those words is doing dishonest work.

How long all of this takes

A legitimate full detail, both checklists, runs four to six hours for one detailer on an average sedan. Express services take about an hour. If a shop promises a complete interior and exterior detail in ninety minutes, steps on these lists are being skipped; there is no other way to make the math work.
