Detailing Tips
Why Is Auto Detailing So Expensive?
Auto detailing is expensive because you are buying hours of skilled hand labor, not a product. A proper full detail takes one trained person four to eight hours using thousands of dollars of equipment and dozens of specialized chemicals, and the price has to cover that time plus insurance, training, and the risk of working on someone’s second most valuable possession. A $290 full detail at our shop works out to less per hour than most trades charge to show up at your house.
Since we are the ones setting the prices, we figure we owe you the honest breakdown of where the money goes.
The labor math nobody shows you
Start with the number that drives everything: hours. Our Signature Full Detail is $290 for a sedan and typically takes five to six hours of continuous work. That is roughly $50 to $58 per labor hour before a single expense comes out, which is less than what a plumber, electrician, or dealership service department bills.
Why so many hours? Because detailing is nearly all hand work. Every vent gets a brush. Every seat track gets picked out. Carpets get shampooed and extracted, leather gets cleaned and conditioned, paint gets hand washed, decontaminated, and dressed panel by panel. There is no machine that does a car interior; there is a person, on their knees in the back seat, for a couple of hours.
So when people ask why is auto detailing so expensive, the first answer is that it mostly is not, per hour. It is just a lot of hours.
What the price covers besides the person
- Products. A well-stocked detail shop runs dozens of chemicals: pH-appropriate soaps, iron removers, tar solvents, leather conditioners, glass sealants, fabric guards. Quality products cost real money per vehicle, and cheap ones show in the results.
- Equipment. Extractors, steamers, dual action polishers, wet-dry vacuums, compressors, lighting good enough to see swirl marks. Call it a five-figure investment that wears out and gets replaced.
- Facility and insurance. A heated shop in Wexford with water, drainage, and garage keepers insurance so your car is covered while it is in our hands. Uninsured operations are cheaper for a reason.
- Skill and judgment. Knowing which chemical will not stain your alcantara, how much clear coat a polish can safely remove, and when to stop. Mistakes in this trade are expensive, and experience is what prevents them.
Why the price range is so wide
Detailing prices confuse people partly because the word covers everything from a $30 gas station wash to a four-figure correction and coating. The service scales with what is actually being done. At our shop, an Express Wash & Vac is $100 because it is about an hour and a half of work. The Signature is $290 because it is a full day’s project. A multi-day paint correction with ceramic coating costs more than both combined because it adds machine polishing time and a premium product with years of warranty behind it.
Condition moves the number too. A well-kept commuter and a dog-hair-filled SUV with three winters of salt stains are entirely different jobs wearing the same package name, which is why final pricing is confirmed by vehicle size and condition. The cheap detail problem
Here is the uncomfortable part of the auto detailing price conversation: the market’s bottom end is often not the same service at a lower price. It is a different service. Corners that save time are invisible on day one: no decontamination before waxing, silicone dressings that fling for weeks, one dirty wash mitt swirling every car in the lot, an interior that smells great for exactly four days because the odor was perfumed rather than extracted.
We are not the cheapest shop in the North Hills and do not try to be. We would rather publish our prices, explain the hours behind them, and let the work justify the difference.
When detailing is not worth paying for
Honesty cuts both ways. If your car is a lease going back in six months, a basic wash routine may be all it needs. If you genuinely enjoy detailing your own car on Saturdays, you can achieve most of what we do with enough time and the right products. Professional detailing earns its price when you lack the time, the equipment, or the stakes are high: resale prep, neglected interiors, paint problems, or protection work like coatings where technique determines whether the money was wasted. Browse everything we offer and the prices are right there next to the work.
See the difference yourself
The best argument for professional detailing is not a blog post; it is your own car, four hours after drop-off. Book a detail and judge whether the hours were worth it. We are confident about the answer.
